Mark and Brigitte Mills founded Gulf Coast Baptist Temple in Biloxi in May 1963 after feeling called by God. Bro. Mills, stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, consulted with Pastor Everett Batty, who encouraged him to act on his calling. The church first met in the Mills’ home before purchasing property on Iberville Drive and relocating two barrack buildings. In January 1967, it was renamed Bible Baptist Church. Bro. Mills resigned in 1968.
Rev. Bob Coffey became pastor in 1968. Under his leadership, the church grew past 100 members and renovated its buildings. In 1971, the church relocated to 20 acres northwest of Biloxi. A bus ministry and Christian school (K-5 to 4th grade) were launched, and a 366-seat auditorium was built in 1973. Rev. Coffey resigned in 1974.
Rev. Ronald Jenkins became pastor in 1974. He expanded the school to 12th grade using the ACE curriculum and led the construction of a new educational wing in 1976. He also introduced a Faith Promise Missions program, raising $25,000 in its third year, and expanded the bus ministry to seven routes. Rev. Jenkins resigned in 1977.
Rick Carter became pastor in 1977 and strengthened the church financially, leading to three major building projects:
1979: New nursery, toddler class, restrooms, missions apartment, and offices. 1986: Two-story educational building (10,000 sq. ft.). 1987: Gymnasium, commercial kitchen, cafeteria, and locker rooms. Attendance exceeded 500, and Faith Promise Missions topped $250,000. A 1995 capital campaign raised over $500,000. Dr. Carter resigned in 1998.
Harold Payne became pastor in 1998. After Hurricane Georges in 1998, the church repaired damage, remodeled facilities, and built a new auditorium. Parking, sports fields, and playgrounds were also upgraded.
Jim Stady became pastor in 2006 and led rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina. A 41,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose building was completed in 2008, housing Christian Collegiate Academy’s daycare, pre-school, kindergarten, and elementary grades, along with a gym and offices.
Dr. Carter returned as pastor in 2012, leading debt retirement, facility renovations, and the construction of a new arena. Attendance and outreach grew. Dr. Carter retired in 2020.
Pastor Mike Spann became pastor in June 2020 and continues to lead the church forward.
